Travels with Harry - a Photo JournalAustralia
|
| |
In December of 2003, Harry sits waiting for his shuttle to Chicago's O'Hare Airport, whence he shall lift off for Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport. A veteran traveler, Harry's nonetheless concerned about whether the onboard oats have molasses on them.
A resident of Melbourne is kind enough to steady Harry with her hand as he gets his first look at down under terra firma at right.
After a long, trans-Pacific flight with no hay, Harry delights in sampling some of the local cuisine along the Victoria coastline. Although the summer heat has left the grazing a bit on the dry side, Harry pronounced the victuals tasty and filling.
His companion contented himself with breaded, deep-fried "Gummy Flake" - a local name for shark.
At right, Harry's friend Rainer gives him a boost for a better view of some of the coastal islands.
This area, just outside Portland, Victoria, is exactly the sort of grazing land Harry likes to find in December.
The Australian bush, once one's in it, can be nearly impenetrable, and it impresses a small horse to think of the first European transportees who were forced to put down roots here.
Not far from the site of the previous photo, Harry comes upon a road sign, displaying a familiar name. Harry wasn't aware that he and his nose had become separated.
Harry looks out at pieces of the former coastline near a formation known as The Twelve Apostles. Constantly battered by surf, the chalky coastline slowly gives way, and progressively smaller islands result.
These two land masses were, until recently connected by an arch. Nicknamed, "London Bridge," the arch collapsed on the evening of 15 January, 1990, leaving two people unhurt, but marooned on the new island until they were rescued several hours later by helicopter.
Stark, Harry's companion, is shown here with the Twelve Apostles in the background. Eventually, they'll be worn away to nothing.
In downtown Melbourne, Harry sees lots of construction adjacent to the Crown Casino complex. This is a huge enterprise, mate, so much so that a multilane highway actually runs through the second floor of the casino.
At left, Harry sees what appears to be a statue, but is actually one of many street buskers, who stands motionless until someone drops some money at his feet.
Do we dare say, "when Harry Met Sally?" Here, Harry sits in a café adjacent to the Crown Casino with one of his newest friends, Sally. Harry has qualities which somehow make him particularly attractive to members of the fair sex.
Join Harry, as he takes you via his photo-journal to Alaska, New Zealand, Germany, Japan, or Return to Harry's Home Page.
