Travels with Harry - a Photo JournalAlaska

| |
In September of 2004, Harry undertook to tour Alaska with some of his newfound friends. After a seemingly-interminable series of airplane rides (during which not one scrap of hay was offered, thank you), Harry finally alighted in Anchorage.
On the left, Harry surveys the Anchorage skyline and the Chugach, beyond. At right, below, he gets a look at some of the countryside surrounding Anchorage from a different perspective, as if he hasn't already spent enough time emulating Pegasus.
At left, Harry gets his first look at the Matanusca Glacier, from several miles away. This is by no means a small chunk of ice, and Harry begins to wish he'd been born one of those Scottish horses with lots of long hair, or at least a Chia Pet.
Here, at right, Harry gets up close and dirty with the Matanusca glacier. The beautiful blue ice is covered with bits of volcanic rock that have been carried across the face of the glacier by the rivulets of clear water, flowing away toward the glacier's edge. Surprisingly, the water is so pure that it has no flavor whatsoever.

Not far from the glacier sits Sheep Mountain Lodge, where they make a mean bowl of chili at the end of a very short and bumpy runway. Harry attempts to visit with the moose in the lodge's restaurant, but finds him not at all talkative.
Harry's found that Alaskans don't seem to be nearly so laconic as Mainers, so he assumes the moose just has some interspecies issues, and isn't comfortable talking with plastic animals. Harry thinks the moose has a lot of room to criticize: he seems like a bit of a stuffed shirt.

At right, Harry gets a look at the kind of variety a horse can expect from an Alaskan roadside attraction.

And left, Harry looks down Hatcher's Pass from the former Independence Mine.
There's more to come on this page, when Harry gets around to posting the photos.
