Employing twenty-nine people,
the company manufactures
Woodex oil-impregnated wood bearings and Original
MECO dry-running shaft seals. Our fully-equipped
plant blends manually-operated, conventional machine
tools with modern, numerically-controlled equipment
in a 17,000 square foot manufacturing facility, formerly home to some 15,000 chickens.
Woodex emphasizes top-quality design and manufacturing
and first-rate customer service, and we are proud to
mark our products "Made in Maine". Woodex began life
in 1908 in Wakefield, Massachusetts as a trademark of The Neveroil Bearing Company,
which described Neveroil's oil-impregnated wood bearings.
Later renamed The
Wakefield Corporation, the company transitioned
to powdered metal fabrication, and the Woodex trademark
and shop were sold in 1966. Relocated in Robinhood,
Maine, the shop became Woodex Bearing Company, Inc.
After a change of ownership in 1980, Woodex moved to
its current location on the Bay Point Road in Georgetown,
Maine.
As of January 1st, 2012, Woodex employees
purchased 51% of the company and Woodex is now employee-owned and
operated as
an
E.S.O.P. trust. The plastics industry is a major market for Woodex's
products, and an article about the employee acquisition appeared
in March of 2012 in Plastics
News Magazine.
All manufacturing processes for Woodex bearings and
MECO shaft seals are contained in our
Georgetown facility. Woodex believes in working closely with our
customers, and we cordially invite customers who find themselves on the
southern Maine coast to visit our plant.
Woodex is closely involved with the community and, with the Georgetown Working
League, funds
an annual
scholarship for deserving Georgetown students. We
are also enthusiastic supporters of the
United Way of Midcoast Maine.
Pursuant to its Export Compliance Policy, Woodex Bearing Company
operates in strict compliance with the U.S. Department of Commerce's and
U.S. Department of State's mandates regarding the sale and export of
products, including as based upon the Export Administration Regulations
("EAR")(15 CFR Section 730 et. seq.) and the International Traffic in
Arms Regulations ("ITAR")(22 CFR Section 120 et. seq.). Woodex's
products have not been developed for and may not be use in any military
technologies, for defense uses, or for dual-use commercial and military
applications without the company's advance and express written approval
and the company will not sell products for any such uses. Woodex will
not sell any products for export or for re-export to countries embargoed
or restricted by the United States, including Cuba, Iran, North Korea,
