Big Bluefish Winner

Glenn IrishBAILEY ISLAND, ME 26 July, 2005 - A local resident has won the Big Bluefish Championship associated with the Bailey Island Tuna Tournament here. Glenn Irish, of Georgetown, Maine, landed a 29-inch, 7.1-pound bluefish while searching for tuna in the Chameleon, his 1990 Grady White Marlin.

Despite a blown head gasket which kept Chameleon's fuel consumption below her normal hundred gallons per hour, the fish was landed without incident - with only a monofilament leader. Following the official weigh-in at Cook's Lobster House, the fish was run through a vintage 1909 Maytag wringer, and Chameleon's lube oil tanks topped off.

Irish is President of Woodex Bearing Company, Inc., a small industrial parts manufacturing firm in Georgetown. The Bluefish, Pomatomus Saltatrix, is the only living member of the family Pomatomidae. It is a trophy fish popular with anglers due to its reputation as a voracious predator and championship fighter. Common to both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, the fish contains an extremely high oil content, and may well prove an effective fuel for internal combustion engines as world petroleum supplies dry up. The fish is quite flavorful when served raw on a bed of shisoh leaves and crispy rice noodles, and eaten with tamari and ground ginger. When cooked, it can serve well as an impromptu smoke bomb.

On 28 July, Team Chameleon netted the Big Cod prize for that day, with an 11.5 pound specimen.
